🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 you don’t need luck to find a little green magic, we have it right here in the forest!
While the classic four-leaf clover gets all the attention, our forests are full of their own “lucky charms.” Take a closer look and you might spot patches of Wood Sorrel, a delicate native plant often mistaken for clover. Its heart-shaped leaves and tiny yellow flowers brighten the forest floor, especially in shady, moist areas.
Even better? Wood sorrel has a tangy, lemony taste (only safe in small amounts while edible in moderation, they contain oxalates, so excessive consumption is discouraged), making it a fun and surprising find for curious explorers!
So today, trade in the search for leprechauns and pots of gold for a walk along the trails. You might just discover that the real treasure is the vibrant, living green all around us.

We welcomed Kingston Christian Academy for a field trip to our Park. The group was made up of 6 to 11 year-olds combined. The parents attended the program, too.
🦅We studied birds of prey. During a 30-minute classroom session, the children met a live American Kestrel. Afterward, we visited the outdoor birds of prey aviary and went on a trail hike on Audubon trail.
🍄🟫We occasionally stopped to briefly discuss decomposition and devompisers;
🌿🍄the key characteristics of fungi vs plants; 🍇 the importance of seasonal plants such as mayapple and mucadine grape vines;
💦🐸and the role of vernal ponds in an ecosystem.
We ended the program by visiting the exhibit hall. It turned out to be a fun learning experience both for the children and the parents. ... See MoreSee Less
